5 Best White Single Beds in the UK 2020 and 2021
Single white beds come in various styles:
We've chosen a selection of five great value white single beds, including wooden and metal white single beds as well as ottomans and storage beds.
Prices are correct at the time of writing.
- wooden single white bed frames are generally made from pine. You'll find some posher ones are made from oak but pine certainly does the job and offers good value. You don't get any built in storage but they are neat. Some come with a trundle bed underneath which you can whip out when an extra guest turns up. You get a headboard included which saves the bother of buying one separately.
- wooden single white beds with drawers or ottoman storage are a good idea if you want somewhere to hide away your bedding. I would go for a white single bed with drawers if you want to access your stuff regularly or an ottoman bed if you only need to get to things from time to time.
- single white metal beds are long lasting and easy to clean. They can be a bit squeaky but that can usually be sorted with occasional tightening. Get one with slats rather than rungs to support the mattress if you can afford the upgrade.
- single white beds which are upholstered with fabric, velvet or faux leather are a bit less common but they have the definite advantage of being less painful to walk into. Faux leather is easier to clean than most fabrics.
- single white divan beds are not terribly exciting but they give a solid base for your mattress and they don't hurt when you walk into them. A lot of divan beds come in a boring beige colour but an online shop like Divan Base Direct sell white single divan beds, as well as other colours. You'll need to budget for a single size headboard.

1. John Lewis & Partners wilton Wooden white Single bed frame - £175
This white single bed frame from John Lewis & Partners isn't as expensive as you might assume and the design is simple so it's unlikely to look dated if you hold onto it for years.
It's made from pine, which is the case with most reasonably priced white single wooden bed frames. Pine isn't quite as posh as a harder wood like oak but it does a good job. When we checked, it had received about 500 reviews and was averaging 4.3/5. One point worth mentioning is that this white single bed has solid slats. That means that the bits which the mattress sits on are firmer than some beds. The alternative type of slats are called 'sprung slats' and they tend to make a mattress feel a little bit softer. There's nothing wrong with solid slats but they are usually cheaper than sprung slats. It's part of the Wilton range and you can also buy matching bedroom furniture such as bedside tables. If you have guests regularly then they also sell this as a white single bed with trundle (£299). |
2. Dreams woodstock Wooden white Single Bed Frame - £179
OK, so this Dreams Woodstock white single bed is pretty similar to the John Lewis & Partners Wilton bed (see #1). It costs about the same, it's made from wood and it has a simple design.
However, there are a few differences worth mentioning. For starters, you can choose whether you want sprung slats or solid slats with the Dreams white single bed. For anyone who doesn't speak fluent mattress jargon, that refers to the bit which the mattress sits on. Solid slats are the cheaper option on this bed and give a slightly firmer feel to your mattress. Sprung slats are - unsurprisingly - a bit springier and feel a little bit softer. Another difference between the two is the type of wood which is used (apologies, we are veering towards a topic so boring that it would send an excitable Yorkshire Terrier to sleep). The Dreams bed uses ash which is classed as a harder wood than pine. In theory, harder woods are more hard wearing but both will do a perfectly adequate job so I would pick whichever design you prefer. Customer reviews of the Woodstock white single bed are outstanding at 4.7/5 after 1000+ ratings. On the downside, it comes with a one year guarantee, which is nothing special. |
3. Birlea Atlas Metal White single BEd - £139
If you like the look of a metal white single bed then you could do a lot worse than the Atlas bedframe which is made by a company called Birlea. For the benefit of any pedants reading, I will make clear that it is described as cream coloured rather than white. Please don't write in.
At the time of typing, the Birlea brand scores 4/5 on TrustPilot or 4.7/5 on Google Reviews. This model scores 4.8/5 on the Happy Beds website although that is from a fairly small number of reviews. Its biggest plus point is that it comes with a 5 year guarantee rather than the usual 12 months which most single white beds offer. Another definite plus is that it uses proper wooden slats. They are sprung slats which give a slightly softer and bouncier feel than solid wooden slats. Some cheap single white beds just use metal rungs rather than slats. Rungs are far from ideal as it doesn't spread the weight out of your mattress very well. |
4. Mission white single Bed with storage - £239
If you're looking for a single white bed which can hide away your bedding or socks then I'd look at this Mission bed with drawers. I've also seen the same bed sold under the name of 'Amani'.
Current review scores are around 4.5/5. It also has a very appealing five year guarantee which is four years more than most. My personal view is that a single white ottoman bed (see #5) is better for storing stuff which you only use occasionally whilst a bed like this with drawers is better for accessing things on a regular basis. You can use the headboard end drawer as a place to store your bedtime books and dentures. The main downside of a wooden bedframe -in my opinion - is that they're painful if you accidentally walk into them whilst creeping out to the toilet. Hopefully you are less clumsy than me. This model is made from pine. As previously discussed in tedious detail, pine is a softer wood which is cheaper than some woods but is perfectly decent if you want good value furniture. It's also got sprung slats, which will give a slightly softer feel to your mattress than solid slats. This white single bed doesn't come with a mattress but you can add one on if you want to save yourself the hassle of a separate order. My advice would be to get either a pocket sprung mattress or a memory foam mattress. Cheaper sprung mattresses are called things like 'open coil' and 'traditional spring' and they just don't have the same level of support as a pocket sprung mattress. Memory foam is a good alternative. It gives you a bit of a hugging feeling, but a lot of people like that and feel it offers a better level of all-over support. It's also good at keeping dust mites away. On the downside, some people find memory foam makes them feel a bit warm in bed. 5. Francis White single bed with Ottoman Storage - £345
Ottoman beds are terrific for hiding away all your old junk but they are mostly sold as double and king size models. This Francis white single bed has a side ottoman with plenty of storage space.
You have to lift the mattress yourself but it's got clever pistons which do a lot of the work so you won't injure yourself whilst getting the Christmas decorations out. The base is sprung which gives a slighter softer and bouncier feeling. It comes with a generous five year guarantee. You'll have noticed that this single white ottoman bed sits on the floor rather than being raised up on legs. The advantage is that you can pile in your collection of Rupert annuals without worrying that the base will collapse under the weight. On the downside, some people don't like the look of a bed which doesn't have any feet. Customer review scores are currently at 4.8/5 for this model, albeit from a modest number of ratings. |
