Casper Mattresses - Reviews, Awards, Discounts and Buying Guide
Casper is a relatively new mattress company which (at the time of writing) makes three mattresses. They've won multiple awards and have very positive customer reviews, so they are certainly worth considering if you are shopping for a new mattress and don't feel a strong loyalty to one of the 'traditional' big-name mattress companies.
Here's our summary of Casper mattresses, with advice on what a Casper mattress is like, and how to pick which one is best for you. |
What type of mattresses do Casper make?
Let's start with the basic stuff, since most normal people only have an interest in mattresses every 5 or 10 years and probably don't follow the daily thrills of the mattress industry.
Most mattresses are made from either springs or foam, or a combination of the two (a 'hybrid' mattress). Pocket springs are the more 'traditional' way of making a decent mattress but many of the best mattresses using foam offer consistent support all over and they can be better for people with allergies. Casper's three mattresses at the time of writing look like this:
All three Casper mattresses are available in the usual standard UK mattress sizes of Single, Double, King Size and Super King Size as well as the less common 'Small Double' size (also known as a Queen size mattress). One other thing worth realising is that whilst The Casper/Casper Original and The Hybrid use memory foam, they are designed in a different way to traditional memory foam mattresses (apologies if I'm boring you, but I'll keep this bit brief). Usually, memory foam mattresses put the memory foam layer on top. Some people like the feel of memory foam whilst some people don't like the 'sinking feeling' and the way it can make you a bit warm. However, The Casper Hybrid and The Casper/Casper Original both have memory foam layers lower down the mattress with a different type of foam on top. The idea is that you get the support of memory foam without it feeling like you are sinking. You'll find that quite a few 'bed in a box' companies have taken this approach (Eve Sleep and Emma Mattress for example). 'The Essential' mattress doesn't use memory foam. It uses a firm foam on the bottom and a softer foam on top. All three of them are part of the newish trend for delivering a mattress in a box. This makes it much easier to deliver and to get up your stairs without taking several pictures off the wall. It arrives squashed up and then slowly expands when you open it. |
Which awards have Casper mattresses won?
There have been various awards given out to Casper over the last few years:
- Back in 2015, Casper picked up a lot of attention for winning an award from Time Magazine for something called the 'Top 25 Inventions of the Year'. They were praised as 'one of many startups upending the sleep industry' with the idea of just offering a smaller choice of products and delivering it in a box.
- 'The Essential' mattress and 'The Casper' mattress were both named as 'best buy' by expert testers.
- In 2020 'The Essential' mattress was voted as 'Product of the Year' in the mattress category in the 'Consumer Survey of Product Innovation'.
- 'The Casper' mattress was 'Approved' by the Good Housekeeping Institute. They said that 'The mattress felt luxurious, substantial, and sturdy in design'.
- Other prominent mattress guides which feature Casper include ones from the Evening Standard and Real Homes.
What reviews do customers give Casper mattresses?
Awards are wonderful, but I'm a big fan of looking up average scores from customers. Most mattress companies show off their 5 star reviews on their own website, but we prefer to dig out reviews from third-party websites.
Casper as an overall brand was scoring a very strong 4.3/5 on TrustPilot when we checked. That puts it as one of the higher rated mattress brands we could find on TrustPilot although brands like Simba Sleep and Ergoflex score higher.
If you're interested, here are all the mattress brands we were able to find on TrustPilot. We searched in January 2021 and have underlined Casper. We used the 'TrustScore'. We couldn't find a few of the big name mattress brands (such as Vispring) and also excluded a few which only had a handful of reviews.
Where two brands had the same score, we put them in alphabetical order.
You can also find customer ratings for the individual mattresses. When we checked in January 2021:
So, as you can see, Casper's mattresses and the brand overall get scores somewhere around 4.5/5 most of the time.

What guarantee and home trial period does Casper offer?
Mattresses which arrive squashed into a box tend to offer much more generous guarantees and trial periods than you might get with a 'traditional' mattress which you would buy in a shop. A few years ago, it was unusual to offer a testing period for a mattress whereas now it is quite common. Rather than trying a few mattresses for a few seconds in a showroom, you just pick one online and see how you feel about it after a few nights.
Casper comes with a 60 night sleep trial when you buy it from Mattress Online, which is the only place selling Casper mattresses in the UK (Casper previously sold their mattresses on their website but stopped doing so in June 2020 and switched to Mattress Online which is a big online retailer). You pay for the mattress up front and then they'll swap it for another mattress sold by Mattress Online if you don't like it. Mattress Online has a massive range so you should be able to find an alternative easily enough.
There are also some other terms and conditions with the sleep trial.
The Casper mattress comes with a 10 year guarantee which is offered by Mattress Online. That's longer than you get with most pocket sprung mattresses but quite common for a foam mattress.

Where can I buy Casper mattresses?
Casper mattresses are only sold by Mattress Online in the UK. As mentioned earlier, Casper previously sold mattresses themselves from their UK website and via Amazon but they stopped doing this in June 2020 and started exclusively selling through Mattress Online.
Mattress Online is a big website which was named Online Bed Retailer of the Year at the UK's main industry awards in 2019/20.
Occasionally, Mattress Online offer discounts and offers on the Casper mattresses. We'll add them at the top of this page when we hear of them.

Will they take away my old mattress if I buy The Casper mattress?
Yes, you can have your old mattress taken away if you buy a Casper mattress from Mattress Online.
At the time of writing you pay £25 to have your old mattress taken away and recycled.

What are the alternatives to The Casper mattress?
In the last few years there's been a big growth in 'bed in a box' mattresses and several of them offer a similar sort of thing to The Casper Original (i.e. the mid-priced mattress in the Casper range). These mattresses are all 100% foam and are good alternatives to The Casper.
