Rollo by Slumberland Mattress Reviews, Awards, Discounts and Buying Guide

The Rollo mattress by Slumberland has a lot going for it. It's won awards, it's made by a well-known mattress brand and it comes with a trial period.

It comes in four different versions and ranges from £299 to £699 for a double size mattress, at the time of writing.

But how does it compare to its rivals in the rather crowded (and confusing) mattress market? And which of the four Rollo mattresses is best?

Here's our guide to Rollo mattresses, including advice on awards, customer reviews and discount codes.

Prices mentioned are what you'll pay for a double mattress and are correct at the time of writing:

What type of mattress is the Rollo Mattress?

The Rollo by Slumberland mattress is actually four different mattresses which vary in price and specifications quite a bit. In order of price:
  1. The Rollo Essential is the cheapest Rollo mattress and is what I'd call a budget mattress. It's made entirely from layers of foam. It is firm according to Slumberland and costs £299 in double at the time of writing.
  2. The Rollo Hybrid is a big step up in specifications and is what I would call the 'standard' Rollo mattress. It's a medium tension mattress and costs £499 in double.
  3. The Rollo Hybrid Duo is similar to the standard Rollo Hybrid but it has two layers of springs as well as foam (hence the word 'duo'). The extra springs are very small but the idea is that they add a bit of extra comfort. It is a medium tension mattress and costs £599 for a double mattress.
  4. The Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus is similar to the Hybrid Duo but it's got more springs for a bit of extra support and comfort. It is a soft mattress according to Slumberland and costs £699.

As you'll have noticed (if you haven't lost interest), three of the mattress are described as being 'hybrid'. That means that they use a combination of springs and foam, whereas a lot of mattresses just have one or the other.

Traditionally, most of us slept on pocket sprung mattresses. They've got a bouncy feeling to them and a good one can last for a long time. Memory foam mattresses are the main rival to pocket sprung mattresses. Fans of memory foam rave about its ability to support you evenly all over and to outlive pocket springs. Other people find memory foam a bit hot or just don't like the way they sink a little bit and hug you like a beloved aunt.

A hybrid mattress aims to combine these two for the perfect mattress.

You might also have noticed that the Rollo by Slumberland by mattresses are described as 'rolled' mattresses. This just refers to the way that they are delivered. Back in the day, all mattresses were delivered flat. The delivery people huffed and puffed their way up your stairs, trod on the cat and took out a couple of bannisters.

Nowadays, a lot of mattresses (including the Rollo mattress) have the air sucked out of them and are squashed up into a box or rolled up. Some of them are referred to as a 'bed in a box' although the pedant in me has always wanted to point out that they are mattresses rather than beds. My suggestion to call them 'Mattresses by Mail' never took off...

What reviews do customers give Rollo by Slumberland Mattresses?

Rollo Mattresses by Slumberland are quite new to the market so there weren't a huge number of reviews available when I checked. At the time of writing (early 2021), all four Rollo mattresses were scoring at least 4.5/5 but that was based on a small number of reviews.

As far as I can tell, Bensons for Beds and Slumberland are owned by the same company. So, it makes sense that the Rollo mattress is sold by Bensons for Beds. As of February 2021, Bensons for Beds was scoring 4.4/5 on TrustPilot. That's a very high score although that probably tells you more about customer service than it does about the Rollo mattresses specifically.

Which is the best Rollo by Slumberland Mattress?

You might assume that the most expensive Rollo by Slumberland mattress is the best. But is it as simple as that?

Well, perhaps but I'd say there are other factors to keep in mind before deciding which one you want.

Importantly, the mattresses vary in how firm they are. The most expensive Rollo mattress is soft, whilst the cheapest Rollo mattress is firm. The two mid-priced models are both medium tension.

There are two general rules when it comes to picking the right firmness mattress for you.
  1. If you are heavy then you should really get a mattress which is firmer than someone who is a real lightweight. Heavy people sink into a mattress a lot more and might end up in a very uncomfortable position on a very soft mattress.
  2. The position that you generally sleep in is also important. Of course, everyone shuffles around but if you sleep on your back or front then you probably need a firmer mattress than someone who sleeps on their side most of the time. Side sleepers put a lot more pressure on their shoulders and hips so they might end up feeling sore on a very firm mattress.

The fly in the ointment is that there's no global agreement on what it means when a mattress is 'firm' or 'soft'. It's possible that two 'soft' mattresses could feel quite different.

For that reason, my advice is to (ideally) try out a mattress in a shop or buy one which has a trial period so you can send it back if it's too firm or soft for you. Thankfully, the Rollo mattresses come with a trial period.

There are other differences to do with the specifications of the four different Rollo mattresses (warning: this section is a bit nerdy and should only be read if you've really got nothing better to do). Differences include:
  • The cheapest Rollo by Slumberland mattress is only 16.5cm deep (Rollo Essential). The standard Rollo Hybrid is 23.5cm deep whilst the two most expensive models are 28cm deep (The Rollo Hybrid Duo and The Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus). Most of the best mattresses are at least 20cm deep. On the plus side, that does mean that the Rollo Essential would be suitable for some bunk beds which have a limited height on the top bunk (check the instructions as it does vary).
  • The most expensive Rollo by Slumberland mattress has a higher number of full size pocket springs (1400), so it should be a bit more supportive. The two mid-priced models both have 1100 full size pocket springs which will be plenty for most people. Some guides I've read reckon that heavier people get more benefit from a higher number of full size springs.
The cheapest Rollo model doesn't use springs at all. You'll notice that the spring count for the two more expensive mattresses is actually listed as 1900 and 2900 but that includes lots of mini springs which are more about a bit of extra comfort. The full size springs do most of the work on a pocket spring mattress.
  • The Rollo Essential is only available as a single or double mattress whilst the more expensive Rollo mattresses are available in more sizes.

My personal view is that there is a big jump up in specification from The Rollo Essential (£299) to The Rollo Hybrid (£499).

The Rollo Hybrid Duo (£599) and The Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus (£699) are certainly upgrades from the Rollo Hybrid but the differences are a bit subtler.

Slumberland Rollo Hybrid
The Slumberland Rollo Hybrid mattress is medium tension and has a layer of springs...
Slumberland Rollo Hybrid Duo
...whilst the Slumberland Rollo Hybrid Duo mattress is also medium tension but has an extra layer of springs...
Slumberland Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus
...and the Slumberland Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus mattress is softer and has even more springs

Which awards have Rollo by Slumberland won?

Another thing worth noting when deciding on the best Rollo by Slumberland mattress is to look at awards.

The two most expensive mattresses both won awards in something called 'Product of the Year' 2021. Rollo Hybrid Duo won in a category for the best 'Hybrid Mattress' whilst Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus  won in a category called 'Hybrid Mattress Plus'.

Three of the mattresses have also got 'approval' from the Good Housekeeping Institute. It's the three more expensive mattresses - Rollo Hybrid, Rollo Hybrid Duo and Rollo Hybrid Duo Plus.

What guarantee and Trial Period does Rollo by Silentnight offer?

All four of the Rollo by Slumberland mattresses come with a 100 night trial period. According to the website there are '100 nights to decide if it's right for you'. I checked with Bensons for Beds who said that the Terms & Conditions are the same as their 40 night comfort guarantee, except over a longer period. Notably, you can only swap it for another mattress and there is a charge for doing so ('If you do opt for an exchange then you will be subject to a charge of 10% of the original bed value and a re-delivery charge to cover some of the costs'). You can't ask for a refund.

Several rival bed in a box brands offer a refund if you're not happy and will pick up the mattress for free, but do check the terms and conditions.

For comparison, there are several similar mattresses which also offer a 100 night trial period including OTTY, Eve Sleep, Brook + Wilde and REM-Fit. There are also some brands which offer a shorter trial period (e.g. Ergoflex, 30 days) and some which offer a longer trial period including:
  • Emma (200 nights)
  • Simba (200 nights)
  • Nectar Sleep (365 nights)
  • Dreamcloud (365 nights)

The warranty with the Rollo mattresses is 8 years. A few years ago, that would have been considered a long guarantee length for a mattress but there's fierce competition between several 'bed in a box' brands which means it is slightly lower than several similar rivals. It's certainly better than a lot of traditional pocket sprung brands but it's a little less than several similarly designed mattresses.

Mattress brands now offering 10 year warranties include OTTY, Emma, Eve Sleep, Simba and Brook + Wilde whilst a small number offer a 15 year warranty (REM-Fit) or even 'forever' (Nectar Sleep and Dreamcloud). Of course, terms and conditions of warranties vary quite a lot so it's worth having a read through to see what's actually covered. Even better, some of them are so boring and full of technical language that you'll be falling asleep before your new mattress even arrives.

Where can I buy Rollo by Slumberland mattresses? do they offer discount codes?

As mentioned earlier, Rollo by Slumberland is only sold by Bensons for Beds. From what I can tell, the Slumberland brand and the Bensons for Beds brand are owned by the same company so it's a partnership between the two.

Deals and discounts do turn up from time to time. If there aren't any other offers, then you can
get £25 off £500 at Bensons for Beds with code BEN25. That code doesn't work with other discounts.

What are the best alternatives to the Rollo by Slumberland mattresses?

I'll split this into two sections as three of the Rollo by Slumberland mattresses are what you would call 'hybrid' mattresses whilst the Rollo by Slumberland Essential mattress is a more budget foam mattress.

Alternatives to the Rollo by Slumberland Essential mattress (£299)

There are several foam mattresses competing with Slumberland's cheapest Rollo mattress, including:
  • Silentnight 3 Zone mattress (£199) - award winning foam mattress which is 18cm deep. It's made by the biggest mattress maker in the UK. Soft/medium feel according to Silentnight.

This cheap Silentnight mattress is a good value foam model
  • Sealy Posturepedic Zoned Rolled Mattress (£226) - foam mattresses from another huge mattress brand. Various versions are  available.

'Zoned' and 'ortho' Sealy mattresses use memory foam whilst the 'gel' version uses a material called 'geltex' on top.

Sealy's rolled mattress comes in three different versions

Alternatives to the Rollo by Slumberland Hybrid mattresses (£499-£699)

The three 'Hybrid' Rollo mattresses use springs and foam, much like these award winning mattresses:
  • The Brook + Wilde Lux mattress (£799) is an award winner which comes with a 100 night trial period and a 10 year guarantee (two years more than the Rollo by Slumberland models). The brand scores an impressive 4.6/5 and you can choose from four different firmness levels including soft, medium, firm and extra firm. It's got 1000 full size pocket springs as well as 2000 mini springs.

  • The Simba Hybrid mattress (£799) has a slightly different design as it just uses mini springs and foam rather than full size pocket springs. Simba reckons their mattress has won 'more awards, from more experts' than its rivals. On TrustPilot, the company scores 4.5/5 at the time of writing and on Amazon this model of mattress scores 4.3/5. It comes with a 10 year guarantee and a 200 night trial period, both of which are better than Rollo by Slumberland. It is medium/firm according to Simba Sleep.
